Net Zero, the common goal

24/11/2023

As the world approaches the deadline to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the decade, the importance of working toward a net-zero future is growing. According to a Nature Climate Change article published by Fast Company in October, “if humanity wants to have a 50-50 chance of limiting global warming, we only need to emit 250 gigatons of CO2 over the next six years,” given that global emissions are currently at 40 gigatons of CO2 per year. (Lamboll, Nicholls, Smith, Kikstra, Byers & Rogelj, 2023)

Global warming is a concern not only for health and the environment, but also for industry, posing major challenges in terms of impoverishment of countries, natural disasters, and diminished resources such as water or food, increasing adaptation costs and affecting industries such as insurance, agriculture, beverages or fisheries the most.

In order to reach net zero, society, governments, and companies must work together to reduce emissions from activities by implementing a sustainability strategy throughout the supply chain, changing the way we consume, redesigning products, tracking emissions data, avoiding greenwashing, and adapting their processes to new regulations. (Schmid, 2023)

For example, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently launched a Net Zero Guideline to establish a common understanding of the concept, which includes high-level principles for all actors seeking to achieve climate neutrality, including transparent communication, credible claims, and consistent reporting of emissions.

The goal isn’t just to reduce all emissions, but to do so in a sustainable way that prevents greenhouse gases from returning to the atmosphere over time, which makes having a strategy even more important.

At Set the World, we help organizations understand their areas of opportunity by guiding them through a sustainable plan, creating solutions that fit their needs, and advising them on how to achieve Net Zero certification or emissions.
